LOVE the angel hug blanket idea, and I'm stealing it. Both when my dad died suddenly and when my first husband died, people who dropped off food (with no questions asked and in containers that didn't need returning) were also angels. And you're so right, death is very expensive, so starting a GoFundMe for someone who's hit with a loss is a lovely thing to do — people often want to help, and this gives them a chance to do so. Healing all around.
Yeah I was shocked to learn that the job I had at the time offered a whole 3 days of bereavement pay. Very underwhelming considering the actual amount of time someone needs to grieve.
Gifts of money definitely fill the gap when you don't know how else to help.
Now that everything is done electronically, I feel like receiving a handwritten card holds even more meaning. It shows someone thought of you, took the time to choose and buy a card, write in it, and mail it. It feels like a show of love.
We had no wonderful ‘church ladies’, but when my husband died, my sons GF sent us a package of 7 days of gourmet frozen meals. This was wonderful - it made me get up and do something, but was not exactly difficult. I totally agree with flowers - always a huge lift. And the Angel Hug blanket is awesome! I am going to steal that 💜 and pass on the idea.
The food is something I truly never would have thought to do for someone. But since I received it I have since paid it forward. I recently sent a food delivery gift card to someone who got covid and has two small children to take care of. It's such a simple way to ease the burden.
One of the last things we did together before my wife passed was binge watch the series "Saving Grace". She told me after watching one episode that what she really wanted was to feel the angel hug that Earl, the angel had given Grace, the star character played by Holly Hunter. I actually started crying again when I was reading about the angel hug blanket.
I recently discovered "memory bears." Teddy bears made out of a loved one's clothing. I'm going to make one out of my husband's flannel shirt and jeans. (Two years, and I still haven't cleaned out closets. Now, I'm glad I didn't.)
Yes!!! This is such an awesome idea! A couple years ago my mom had teddy bears made out of my grandmother's old fur coat. I had no idea people out there did this kind of thing.
One day when I have the wherewithal to go through my son's clothes I'd like to to the same for his kids.
There are memory bear makers on Etsy. Years ago my husband turned a small, chain saw carved bear into a peeing bear fountain with a bit of added anatomy. Do you double dog dare me to make my memory bear anatomically correct? Of course, I would make him trousers for when we’re out and about. My husband would think it hysterical.

Three days is obscene. Yet that was the policy at every for-profit organization I worked for, and we were supposed to think it was magnanimous.

Agreed. My mom is actually a card-maker of beautifully crafted cards for any occasion. I love receiving her cards and so does everyone who gets one!
I love that your mom is card-maker! Back in the day, I always wanted to write greeting cards. I applied for a couple jobs. Alas no luck.
I would have never thought of that as a writer! They actually post jobs for it??
They used to. I'm talking in the 90's and early 2000's. I have no idea if they do now. (As you and I both dash off to google!)
The angel hugs blanket is so inspired
Isn't it such a great idea? I use it every night while watching TV ❤

I'm not familiar with that show. I'll go look for it.
I choke up regularly when I wish for one last hug. It's something I miss desperately from my son. That and hearing, "Hi mom."
I think most of us would give up almost anything for one last something ❤
I would. I would give up almost anything just to hear her say, "Goodnight, sweetheart, I love you, I hope you sleep peacefully."

Thanks for the reminder, Kris 😊
